A recent history of the NFL’s 18th pick, which belongs to Dolphins

What does recent history suggest Miami might be able to get with the 18th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft?

The Miami Dolphins will enter the 2020 NFL Draft with a plentiful collection of top draft choices. And while the team’s 5th overall pick is key among in Miami’s search for a long-term answer at the quarterback position, the other remaining 1st-round selections are both critical pieces to rebuilding the team’s roster through and through. Miamis’ second pick, at 18 overall, is specifically important in an unusually strong NFL Draft class.

But what kind of recent history has the pick provided teams?

Here are the picks made with the 18th overall pick since the turn of the millennium back in 2000:

2019: IOL Garrett Bradbury, NCST (Minnesota)
2018: CB Jaire Alexander, LOU (Green Bay)
2017: CB Adoree’ Jackson, USC (Tennessee)
2016: C Ryan Kelly, BAMA (Indianapolis)
2015: CB Marcus Peters, WASH (Kansas City)
2014: S Calvin Pryor, LOU (New York Jets)
2013: S Eric Reid, LSU (San Francisco)
2012: DE Melvin Ingram, SCAR (San Diego)
2011: IDL Corey Liuget, ILL (San Diego)
2010: C Maurkice Pouncey, UF (Pittsburgh)
2009: DL Robert Ayers, TENN (Denver)
2008: QB Joe Flacco, UDEL (Baltimore)
2007: DB Leon Hall, MICH (Cincinnati)
2006: LB Bobby Carpenter, OSU (Dallas)
2005: DE Erasmus James, WISC (Minnesota)
2004: DE Will Smith, OSU (New Orleans)
2003: DE Calvin Pace, WF (Arizona)
2002: RB T.J. Duckett, MSU (Atlanta)
2001: OT Jeff Backus, MICH (Detroit)
2000: QB Chad Pennington, MARSH (New York Jets)

As one might expect, there’s more volatility here than one would find with the history of the 5th pick. There’s still some booming upside in players such as Alexander, Peters, Ingram, Pouncey or Flacco. But there’s also some ugly misses — Pryor in 2014, Carpenter in 2006 and James in 2005 loom large as horrifying end results that teams should aspire to avoid at all costs.

But again, 2020 is a busy class for all the right reasons. The talent that will be available at 18 is typically what one would find towards the end of the top-10 — so Miami will hope to make this pick count for all the right reasons and walk away with one of the better values of recent history.
