Greetings to you all who have become valued followers of Fighting Irish Wire. In our few months together the site has grown in terms of writers, contributors and content as well as in the amount of you that check us out on a regular basis.
This week has been an all-timer. 30 years from now your kids or grandchildren will be asking you about this week and the craziness around it. You’ll share with them how you probably laughed off the initial reports that hinted at the NBA and NCAA Tournaments potentially being played in empty arenas.
You’ll tell how the dominoes continued to fall and how the NBA, NHL, MLB, NCAA and seemingly every sports organization under the sun cancelled their games, suspended their seasons or closed up shop.
You’ll also assuredly remember the uncertainty of everything this week and just foreign it all felt. You’ll also probably one day recall how things got worse before they turned for the better, which they’ll eventually do, but it doesn’t appear that day will be anytime too soon.
What I can tell you is that even with the craziness of Coronavirus, COVID-19 and the world today, we’re still going to be here at Fighting Irish Wire.
Sure, there won’t be games to recap, coaching decisions to question or many recruiting visits to over-analyze. But we’ll be here to inform to the best of our abilities on whatever the news of the day brings and entertain you in ways we haven’t quite explored yet.
There were plans already in the works previous to the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States for us to give Notre Dame fans a tournament to follow for March since the Fighting Irish weren’t headed there in hockey or women’s basketball and would have needed a miracle to get there in men’s basketball. That plan is still in place.
We’ll also have coverage of the NCAA Tournament for you in the next few weeks, even if it isn’t actually being played. Just how will we do that, you ask? Keep with us and you will see.
The NFL Draft featuring a hand-full of Notre Dame products is right around the corner and believe it or not, there will be plenty of news for us all to discuss during all of this.
Sports are an outstanding escape from the stresses of life and they are certainly missed in this time where so much of the country and world are worried and left wondering what happens next.
Although there aren’t games to recap or at this given moment, even to look forward to, it doesn’t mean we can’t continue to entertain you in these trying times.
As Mayor Vaughn said in Jaws, “It’s a beautiful day, the beaches are opened and people are having a wonderful time!” We’re open for business here at Fighting Irish Wire and we plan on continuing to bring you all a wonderful time, just without any additional shark attacks. We’re here to keep you entertained in these trying times and we’ll all get through this together.
In the meantime, take care of yourselves and each other.
Your friends on the FIW Staff,
Nick Shepkowski, Jeff Feyerer, Geoffrey Clark & Michael Chen
