Throughout its tradition-rich history, Tennessee has captured some monumental victories.
This season, each week, Vols Wire will look back at one of Tennessee’s memorable games against its upcoming opponent.
The Volunteers (5-5, 3-4 SEC) will host South Alabama (5-5, 2-5 SBC) at Neyland Stadium Saturday.
Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. EST and the game will be televised by ESPNU.
Saturday’s game will mark the second time that Tennessee and South Alabama have clashed on the gridiron. The first meeting was on Sept. 28, 2013 and the Vols outlasted South Alabama, 31-24, at Neyland Stadium.
This installment will revisit Tennessee’s victory under first-year head coach Butch Jones.
The Jaguars opened the scoring with a first-quarter touchdown before UT reeled off 24 consecutive points for a 24-7 lead by halftime. Quarterback Justin Worley recorded touchdown passes with A.J. Branisel and Josh Smith.
Kicker Michael Palardy pulled the Vols to within 7-3 with a 40-yard field goal with 9 minutes, 49 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Marlin Lane had a 2-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter.
The Vols’ last score of the contest came on an 11-yard run by Rajion Neal early in the third frame.
Neal was Tennessee’s leading rusher in the contest as he finished with 169 yards and one touchdown on 25 attempts.
The Jaguars mounted a late comeback effort, scoring 17 unanswered points.
