The 2021 NFL draft was one for the ages, especially if you are a fan of Florida football. After spending several seasons in a funk when it comes to sending former players into the professional league, the Gators had their best showing in five years, with some milestones to boot.
Among the accolades accrued this time around was a significant achievement by star tight end Kyle Pitts, who became the highest picked player at his position in the common era of the draft when the Atlanta Falcons selected him at No. 4. Also considered the best tight end prospect in draft history by many, the former Gator brings a lot to the table with his new team.
CBS Sports writer Chris Trapasso weighed in with his ranking of the top-10 rookies from the recent draft among non-quarterback positions. Given that Pitts was the first player who does not line up under center to be picked, it comes as little surprise where he lands on the list. Here is what Trapasso had to say.
1. Kyle Pitts, TE, Falcons
Pitts, man. He’s a different breed. And he’s in an offense that absolutely has to account for JULIO JONES. And Calvin Ridley, who’s fresh off a 90-catch, 1,354-yard, nine-touchdown 2020. Sure, his production was inflated because Jones was injured. But the big man is back, which is going to give Ridley even more advantageous cornerback matchups.
And who in the world is covering Pitts? Your linebacker isn’t. Neither is your safety or your slot corner. The 6-6, 240-plus pound explosive yet nuanced route runner with a soccer net catch radius and deceptive YAC capabilities is in for a monster Year 1 with Matt Ryan throwing him passes in the ATL.
While former Clemson Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence — the first overall pick — is considered a lock to instantly impact the Jacksonville Jaguars, Pitts might actually provide more value to his new team depending on how things shake out. There is a lot to be excited about for Gators fans next season in the NFL, and Kyle Pitts is the cherry on top of the sundae.
