A look at rising non-Power Five offensive coaches

A look at five rising non-Power Five offensive coaches.

Scotty Walden

Walden, 30, has taken his third head coaching position in his career.

At 26-years-old, he served as head coach at Division III East Texas Baptist in 2016. He was offensive coordinator from 2013-15 at East Texas Baptist and current Tennessee linebackers coach Brian Niedermeyer was Walden’s wide receivers coach in 2014.

Walden joined Southern Miss’ coaching staff in 2017 as a wide receivers coach. He then moved to co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach. After one game in 2020, Walden was promoted to interim head coach, a position he held for four games.

On Oct. 27, Walden was named head coach at FCS Austin Peay.

Walden’s offense is a tempo spread option with an emphasis on running and throwing the ball downfield. He grew up studying the likes of Mike Leach and Rich Rodriguez and has combined the two worlds by developing a passing attack that is built off Air Raid principles, while being able to run the football.
