What. Just. Happened?!
With Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton coming into Sunday tied for the drivers’ championship, the final race of the 2021 Formula 1 season at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix came down to the final lap. And it was a decision by the race directors that ultimately gave Verstappen a shot at passing the rival he’s battled with all season.
And he did, winning his first world title over Hamilton, who missed out on winning his eighth championship and his fifth straight.
But let’s look at what led up to that heart-stopping, thrilling final lap and Verstappen winning, which didn’t seem like it could happen late in the race.
