A Brandon Scherff extension makes sense sooner than later for Ron Rivera

Brandon Scherff deserves a new deal now.

Now is a good time for the Washington Redskins to get an extension done with offensive lineman Brandon Scherff.

Scherff is slated for free agency but new head coach Ron Rivera could go ahead and make a big statement by getting one of the team’s veteran leaders under contract.

This isn’t just about performance. Yes, Scherff can be elite on the inside and yes, he’s had his injury problems as of late. But this is more about sending a message to not only the team, but the fans.

Scherff, after all, is a former top-10 pick and has an unknown future in an organization that already seemingly burned a bridge with an elite talent like Trent Williams. Letting Scherff slip to the open market could only put the Redskins in a position to balk at a high asking price.

Because looking at the history of the market, the NFL isn’t in the business of letting elite linemen slip to the market.

If Rivera and the Redskins are smart, a Scherff extension is in the works and wrapped up soon, not closer to the market opening. When it comes to retaining top talent, spending smartly, keeping quality leaders around and protecting Dwayne Haskins, it only makes sense.
