A bettor won $39K thanks to a very strange PJ Tucker performance

Betting on a player to slowly break out of a slump is a dangerous game with massive rewards

Miami Heat forward P.J. Tucker has been going through it lately.

Heading into Thursday night’s action against the Charlotte Hornets, the veteran was averaging 5.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 0.8 three pointers per contest in his last six games. Really, it’s not too surprising to see the 36-year-old coast into the All-Star break. Tucker has already played 52 games this season and can best serve Miami (+1200 to win the title at Tipico) by staying fresh for the playoffs.

Yet one bettor felt confident Tucker would begin breaking out of his slump against the Hornets—but only barely.

Over at FanDuel, Instagram user @Rdescorbeth12 put $142 on Tucker to score at least 15 points with fewer than two three-pointers made. The odds were stacked against the bettor at +27755.

It didn’t matter. He cashed the ticket anyways and earned himself $39,555.32 as Tucker finished with exactly 15 points and one three pointer in 44 minutes.

It also cashed in just about the most stressful way possible. Miami eventually finished off the Hornets, 111-107, but required double overtime to do so. That could’ve been absolutely killer for this bettor given that Tucker scored his 14th and 15th points with 4:07 remaining in regulation. With both legs of the parlay covered, the bettor just needed the game to end in order to get his payout.

Instead it just kept going. And going.

Tucker remained on the floor in OT but didn’t attempt a shot in either of the extra frames. That probably didn’t make it any easier to watch considering he’s always around the ball.

In 17 outings with 11+ points this season, Thursday night was only the third of the year in which Tucker reached the mark with fewer than two three-pointers. It just wasn’t for a lack of trying. Tucker attempted four shots behind the arc against Charlotte but could only get one to drop.

Now @rdescorbeth12 can afford floor seats in Miami to thank Tucker for his efforts in person.
