Few sports elicit more people shouting “I could do that” from their couches than golf.
The game looks so easy, after all. Just hit the ball into the hole. Big whoop. You could make those putts at Augusta or land on the island green at TPC Sawgrass, right?
To anyone who thinks they deserve to be out there with the best golfers in the world, the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club has just one small question for you:
How would you play a 290-yard par-three? Because that’s exactly what’s waiting for anyone who wants to win this weekend.

The good news is this hole plays downhill, which chips away at the distance by about 20 yards. The bad news is there are bunkers all around the green within 30 yards of the pin. So laying up isn’t even a safe strategy.
Personally, I’m taking out my driver, hitting one way out of bounds and going back to the clubhouse for a few drinks. Good luck to anyone who has a better idea — and there sure seem to be plenty.
