Texas A&M coach Mike Elko ‘had an idea’ junior QB Conner Weigman’s departure ‘was coming’

“I had an idea that was coming. I think it’s the right thing for him, his future and career. I have a tremendous amount of respect for him.”

After three years in College Station, Texas A&M redshirt sophomore quarterback Conner Weigman has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal.

As was the case for many members of the 12th Man, Aggies football head coach Mike Elko was not surprised by the news of Weigman’s impending departure.

“So much respect for Conner and the way he handled a tremendously challenging situation for him. To lose the job and stay a consummate teammate, a great Aggie, a great teammate,” Elk said Wednesday. “I had an idea that was coming. I think it’s the right thing for him, his future and his career.

“I have a tremendous amount of respect for him.”

Despite the bittersweet nature of Weigman’s announcement, this truly is the best move for all parties involved. Texas A&M‘s offense was stagnant with Weigman under center and has a higher upside with redshirt freshman Marcel Reed as the signal caller.

Weigman‘s career in Aggieland will unfortunately be remembered as what could’ve been, largely due to injuries.
