Just when college football starts to look like it might make sense, rankings and polls come out that remind us all that it is the furthest thing from science with a myriad of subjectivity mixed in.
The Iowa Hawkeyes just won their eighth game of the year with a 13-10 win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers during Rivalry Week. It took all three phases making big plays for Iowa to pull off the victory, something that good teams do.
Despite the win, not all are on board with the Hawkeyes. In this week’s USA TODAY NCAA Re-rank 1-134, they have essentially knocked the Hawkeyes for winning and slid them down one spot.
Iowa now sits at No. 34 this week after being ranked No. 33 before kickoff. Alternatively, Nebraska, who suffered the loss, saw the exact same movement as Iowa.
The Cornhuskers are seemingly not being penalized for the loss and dropped just one spot from No. 48 down to No. 49.
While it may not mean much in the grand scheme of things as both are bowl eligible and not near the College Football Playoff bracket, the rankings are curious at best as to how a team winning is penalized with the same downward movement as the opponent they just beat.
Up next for Iowa and their bowl game remains to be seen. The Hawkeyes could be destined for a southeastern destination to take on an ACC or SEC opponent, but only time will tell as conference championships work themselves out next weekend.
