Texas A&M (8-4, 5-3 SEC) finished the season with a record that only makes Aggie fans question the future under first-year head coach Mike Elko, as Saturday night’s 17-7 home loss to Texas epitomized the Aggies’ offensive issues post star running back Le’Veon Moss’s season-ending injury.
From start to finish, the only thing that kept the Longhorns from blanking A&M by three or more touchdowns was a handful of turnovers, including cornerback Will Lee’s pick-six, which didn’t create the offensive momentum we thought it would.
While it will take a week or so for the Aggie fan base to digest the loss, Mike Elko deserves some leeway amid his first season. Still, it is fair to say that OC Collin Klein deserves the bulk of the blame for poor play calling, which included two red zone stops and too many inside zone run calls.
When measuring success during any head coach’s first season, the only path toward on-field success is making the necessary changes in the offseason to reload and avoid rebuilding.
Texas A&M will now await their bowl game destination, and the Texas Longhorns are off to the SEC Championship Game, a feat the Aggies have never accomplished.
