Texas A&M’s wide receiver rotation could see an influx of talent going into next season, as last week’s news that sophomore WR Johntay Cook II has departed the Texas Longhorns football program after less than two full seasons.
While Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian noted that the separation was “mutual,” the primary reason for Cook’s exit has not been revealed. However, many have surmised that the Longhorns’ deep wide receiver corps left Cooks stranded on the depth chart with several veterans, including Isaiah Bond, playing their final collegiate season.
After the news broke, nearly every “big” program outside of Alabama and Ohio State reportedly contacted Cook, including Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko.
On Monday night, Cook changed his profile picture on X back to one of the photos taken during his recruiting visit to Texas A&M, either hinting at his new transfer destination or simply teasing Aggie fans.
As a Top 40-ranked prospect in the 2023 recruiting cycle (247Sports), Cook’s twitchy athleticism, downfield speed, and notable route running are all too intriguing to pass up. Johntay Cook II finished his Texas career with 16 receptions, 273 yards, and two touchdowns.
