NASCAR has finally announced the highly anticipated penalty report from Martinsville Speedway. On Tuesday evening, NASCAR announced a series of penalties to Ross Chastain’s No. 1 team, Austin Dillon’s No. 3 team, and Bubba Wallace’s No. 23 team after manipulating the end of the NASCAR Cup Series race at Martinsville.
Chastain, Dillon, and Wallace were each penalized 50 driver points and fined $100,000. NASCAR also fined the owners of each team $100,000 and took away 50 owner points. Finally, crew chiefs Phil Surgen, Justin Alexander, and Bootie Barker, and their respective spotters, Brandon McReynolds, Brandon Benesch, and Freddie Kraft, have all been suspended for the 2024 season finale at Phoenix.
All three NASCAR organizations revealed their plans to appeal the penalties issued by the sport. The ruling from NASCAR means that if Chevrolet hadn’t manipulated the race, Christopher Bell likely would’ve made the Championship 4 instead of William Byron. The four drivers running for a Cup Series title didn’t change, but the teams responsible for Byron making it and Bell’s last-ditch Hail Mary are suffering the consequences.
