As its dominance continues, Ohio State soccer receives surprise ranking

While Ohio State might be known as a football school, its soccer program has also been among the best in the country this season.

With Ohio State football having a primetime battle with the No. 3-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions Saturday, all eyes have been on Will Howard, Ryan Day and the Buckeyes in Columbus. However, one other sports program for Ohio State is quietly among the best in the nation, and that’s its men’s soccer team.

In the most recent United Soccer Coaches rankings, the Buckeyes ranked No. 1, although they did come in at No. 2 in the NCAA Men’s Soccer RPI. Ohio State and Maryland (No. 10) are the lone Big Ten teams in the top 15.

With an 11-1-2 record, this Ohio State team has been impressive, and they continue to fight through games, as was evidences in its most recent draw with the Michigan State Spartans Tuesday.

The Buckeyes, since a few games were played since the rankings were released, are now 11-1-3 and 6-1-2 in conference play. They are a resounding 7-0-3 at home.

Ahead of the Big Ten quarterfinals on Nov. 7, the Buckeyes will have a goliath match against Maryland on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Ludwig Field in College Park.
