Georgia Tech replaces special teams coach amidst struggles

Georgia Tech is naming Tim Salem special teams coach for the rest of the season after announcing Ricky Brumfield is no longer with the program.

A two sentence press release from the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Tuesday revealed Ricky Brumfield, the associate head coach for special teams, is no longer with the program.

Tim Salem, a senior adviser to head coach Brent Key, will assume the role of special teams coach for the rest of the season. The team did not disclose why Brumfield had been replaced, or why he did not accompany the team to Saturday’s game, a 21-6 loss to Virginia Tech.

Georgia Tech had significant issues on special teams in the loss to Notre Dame back on Oct. 19, including having a field goal attempt blocked and another failed attempt on a dropped snap. The team also gave up a 27-yard gain on a fake punt by the Fighting Irish.

After that game, coach Key said “special teams for three weeks now have not been up to expectations,” continuing to call the unit “unacceptable” and saying he would “make the adjustments necessary. … And that’s the decisions I have to make, and I’ve made.”

The Yellow Jackets are 5-4 on the year and 3-3 in ACC play heading into a bye week. They will host the undefeated Miami Hurricanes on Nov. 9.
