Two Washington defensive backs named to PFF Big Ten Team of the Week

Washington had two defensive backs – cornerback Thaddeus Dixon and safety Makell Esteen – named to the PFF Big Ten Team of the Week.

Despite a 31-17 loss to Indiana on Saturday, the Washington Huskies defense continues to show flashes of individual brilliance. This week, it was Washington’s secondary that took home honors, as Steve Belichick’s defense held the Big Ten’s top passing offense to just 124 yards through the air.

Cornerback Thaddeus Dixon and safety Makell Esteen were instrumental in that effort, and both were rewarded with a spot on Pro Football Focus’ Big Ten Team of the Week on Monday.

Dixon had his best game of the year, according to PFF, allowing just one reception for 2 yards on three targets. He added a season-high 5 tackles and was a big part of the Huskies containing Indiana receiver Elijah Sarratt, who was held to just one catch for 12 yards.

Esteen drew his second start of the season with Cameron Broussard out with a foot injury, finishing with 13 tackles (7 solo) in a season-high 68 snaps. The senior seemed to always be around the play when Indiana ran the ball, providing key run support against a Hoosiers team that ran 52 times on Saturday.

With Indiana’s starting quarterback Kurtis Rourke sidelined with a thumb injury, Washington held backup Tayven Jackson to 11-of-19 passing for 124 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception, a one-handed grab on a tipped pass by defensive tackle Jacob Bandes early in the second half.

Indiana cornerback D’Angelo Ponds, who had two interceptions including a 65-yard pick six, was named to both PFF’s Big Ten and national team of the week as well.
