Steelers HC Mike Tomlin has his starting QB vs the Jets

The Steelers starter will be a surprise for everyone.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has his starting quarterback for this week’s game against the New York Jets. But according to Steelers team reporter Teresa Varley, Tomlin is not going to share whether it’s going to be Justin Fields or Russell Wilson with the public.

Tomlin did note that both quarterbacks looked sharp this week in practice. Fields has started the first six games of the season and led the Steelers to a 4-2 record. But he lamented that he didn’t think he played well enough to keep the job. This combined with Wilson being healthy is why Tomlin opened the competition back up this week.

Keeping the name of the starter close to the vest is some excellent gamesmanship by Tomlin. It forces the Jets to gameplan for two very different types of quarterbacks and dedicates prep to account for Fields’ running ability just in case he starts.
