It seems like when Notre Dame football made an offer to 2026 South Carolina safety [autotag]J’Zavien Currence[/autotag], it seemed that the Irish would have a solid chance to lure him away from home.
That turned out not to be the case as on Thursday the 6-foot, 4-inch and 210-pound defender opted to stay close to home and committed to South Carolina. As the nation’s No. 98 overall recruit according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Currence has the potential to be a difference maker in the secondary.
While the Irish have had tons of recent success as the safety position with Kyle Hamilton and Xavier Watts, it still wasn’t enough to convince him to play in South Bend. Not all players want to leave home and play away from their family, which unfortunately worked against Notre Dame in his recruitment.
It wouldn’t surprise me to see the Irish continue to recruit him, but it may be hard for him to flip. The good news is that there is a lot of time between now and his signing period.
