Dabo Swinney on new roster limits, how it will affect Clemson football

Swinney comments on the new roster limits in college football.

With new roster limits coming to college football, Clemson football’s Dabo Swinney is already considering how his team will adapt. Currently, programs are allowed up to 85 scholarship players, but including walk-ons, Clemson’s roster can exceed 140 players. Next season, though, that number must be cut to 105, requiring Swinney to make some tough choices.

“We have to cut a lot of guys,” Swinney explained, acknowledging the challenge of balancing contributors with limited roster spots. Clemson’s numbers will be tight, with only 12 seniors expected to graduate and 13 recruits committed for 2025. “There’s always normal attrition,” Swinney said. “Some players may want more time on the field or a different role, and we’ll need to factor that in.”

Swinney feels prepared for these adjustments, emphasizing Clemson’s developmental philosophy. He highlighted Ryan Linthicum, who spent three years learning before becoming the starting center, as an example of the type of player they value. “We’re not filling our roster with superstars at every position,” Swinney said. “It’s about building a balanced roster with a mix of talent and experience.”

As the new roster rules approach, Swinney is ready to shape a team that meets the 105-player requirement while keeping Clemson’s future in mind.
