Texas has a clear path to winning SEC title in first season with conference

The Texas Longhorns have looked legit, and the road ahead features minimal hurdles.

The Texas Longhorns are rightfully ranked as the No. 1 team in the nation through the first seven weeks of the 2024 college football season. Though transitioning to a new league can be a difficult task, as evidenced by their former Big 12 and current SEC foe, Oklahoma Sooners, the Longhorns have made it look easy.

As things stand, Texas is the only SEC team with a perfect record. Looking at the teams they’ve faced, their opponents have been most unranked programs. With the only two ranked opponents being the underwhelming Michigan Wolverines and the somewhat disappointing Oklahoma Sooners.

Looking ahead, the Longhorns will take on a few challenging opponents like the Georgia Bulldogs at home and the Texas A&M Aggies on the road.

Though those two games will be tricky, Steve Sarkisian and his team have proven that they have the talent and the depth to take on any team in the nation. This season has been strange, though, with strong teams losing the most unexpected matchups (I’m looking at you, Alabama Crimson Tide).

It won’t be easy, but there is a clear path for Texas to run the table and finish the regular season undefeated. If that’s the case, they will make the SEC championship game and likely face Georgia or Alabama, with the LSU Tigers and Tennessee Volunteers looming as possible challengers.

For now, SEC fans will have to sit back and wait to see if the Longhorns either slip up, or if another teams steps up and proves worthy of dethroning the top team in the country.
