NCAA shortens the transfer portal window for football and men’s basketball, per reports

According to multiple Tuesday reports, the NCAA trimmed the football and men’s basketball transfer portal window down from 45 to 30 days.

According to multiple Tuesday reports, the NCAA Division I Council trimmed its football and men’s basketball transfer portal windows from 45 days to 30 days.

The football window will be divided into a 20-day opening in the fall, which begins after conference championship weekend, and a 10-day opening in the spring at the end of April.

Men’s basketball transfers will only have one 30-day window, which begins the Monday after the second round of the NCAA Tournament. If the rule is in effect during the 2025 edition of March Madness, that would mean players have from March 24 to April 23 to find a new team.

Duke basketball coach Jon Scheyer took advantage of the portal this offseason to supplement top-ranked freshman [autotag]Cooper Flagg[/autotag] and a talented 2024 recruiting class. Purdue sharpshooter Mason Gillis, Syracuse forward Maliq Brown, and Tulane guard Sion James all joined the program, each with multiple years of experience.

Gillis made more than 46% of his 3-pointers last season en route to a national championship appearance, James started more than 100 games for the Green Wave, and Brown led the ACC in effective field goal percentage.

The NCAA confirmed the vote shortly after the reports, emphasizing that any changes won’t be finalized until Wednesday.
