NASCAR arrived at Talladega Superspeedway looking for an exciting second race in the Round of 12, and it lived up to the hype. The end of each stage was full of high drama as playoff drivers looked to earn the points needed to make the Round of 8. However, there was also a new NASCAR Cup Series record set at Talladega on Sunday afternoon.
With five laps to go at Talladega, Austin Cindric led the way, but a big push from Brad Keselowski spun out the No. 2 car, causing the “Big One.” In fact, it was the largest crash in Cup Series history, with 28 of the 40 cars involved in the accident. It included a majority of the 12 playoff drivers outside of William Byron, Kyle Larson, and Denny Hamlin. Christopher Bell made it through but had slight damage, too.

NASCAR has been going to Talladega for a long time, but it has never seen a wreck of this magnitude in the Cup Series. The “Big One” drastically changed the playoff picture, as the drivers who made it through now enter the Round of 12 finale with a very healthy gap. It was a wild race on Sunday afternoon and one that will forever live in the NASCAR history books.
