Bill Belichick to the Jets after Robert Saleh fired? There’s 1 awkward problem with that.

Remember when Bill Belichick resigned from the Jets on a napkin?

OK, yeah yeah yeah sure, the New York Jets firing Robert Saleh before Week 6 means all we’re going to hear about is OMG BILL BELICHICK IS NEXT!

Except you need to know your history to know why this might be … a little awkward.

The year was 2000. On January 4, Belichick was all set to be introduced to the New York media as the newest head coach of the Jets, which was doubly wild because the Jets traded a first-rounder to the New England Patriots for his services.

Then, Belichick famously handed in his resignation written on a napkin, then announced to the reporters gathered that he was resigning.

Now, current Jets owner Woody Johnson didn’t have the team then. Leon Hess had died the year before and the franchise was waiting to see if Johnson or Charles Dolan would purchase them. Johnson got it just days later.

So … would Woody have hard feelings over that move? Guess we’ll see. Here’s speculation from fans and others:
