Xavier McKinney, Jayden Reed join exclusive company in Packers’ win over Rams

Xavier McKinney and Jayden Reed are doing rare things for the Packers to start the 2024 season.

Xavier McKinney and Jayden Reed both accomplished rare feats in the Green Bay Packers’ win over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday at SoFi Stadium.

McKinney intercepted another pass, while Reed produced 97 yards from scrimmage. While impressive, neither is particularly noteworthy on its own. But combined with previous production, both McKinney and Reed joined exclusive company in Week 5, per the NFL.

McKinney now has an interception in five straight games to start the season, becoming just the fourth player since 1970 to have an interception in five straight to start a season. The three others: Trevon Diggs (2021), Brian Russell (2003) and Lemar Parrish (1973).

Including his two-interception season finale with the New York Giants in 2023, McKinney now has an interception in six straight games and seven picks in his last six games overall. The NFL record for consecutive games with an interception is eight.

McKinney’s five interceptions are the most through the first five games of a season since Diggs had six in 2021. Since 1990, only 10 players have intercepted at least 5 passes in the first five weeks of a season.

Reed is also doing rare things to start 2024. Through five games, Reed has 414 receiving yards and 110 rushing yards. His 524 total yards rank fifth among all players. He’s just the sixth player in NFL history and the first since 1985 to produce at least 400 receiving yards and 100 rushing yards during the first five weeks of a season. The others: Roger Craig (1985), Paul Hofer (1980), Timmy Brown (1965), Frank Gifford (1959) and Wilbur Moore (1943). The previous four were primarily running backs.

Reed caught a 53-yard pass and had an 11-yard run against the Rams, upping his explosive play total to 13 through five games. Reed leads the NFL in catches of 20 or more yards (8) and is third in catches of 40 or more yards (3). He also leads all NFL receivers in rushing yards.
