The Cincinnati Bengals aren’t back on track as a contender or anything so dramatic, but picking up that first win with Sunday’s 34-24 final over the Carolina Panthers is a big deal.
With the offense playing well enough to mask major defensive issues, the Bengals at least have a little bit of life — and some quick takeaways worth mentioning, too.
Defense remains an issue
Yes, the unit forced a punt. But the fact that’s even a conversation a week removed from the unit being unable to do so while allowing 38 points is a problem. So, too, were missed tackles, bad angles and a mostly lackluster pass-rush besides Trey Hendrickson. The offense getting a lead made the Panthers predictable and uncomfortable, too. Nevermind, the next point…
Cam Taylor-Britt
What’s wrong with Cam Taylor-Britt? He coughed up two huge gains on the first drive and was yanked by the third in favor of DJ Turner. Opposing quarterbacks — especially like Andy Dalton — shouldn’t be bothering to go to CTB’s side of the field. Instead, Dalton tried to pick on him all day. CTB did get back in the rotation, allowing a touchdown, and it’s worth wondering if he’s playing hurt, at least.
Chase Brown breakout is here
This was a matter of time. Zack Moss had dominated the snap count over the first three games. He’s a nice workhorse-style back, but Brown is more explosive and it showed on Sunday. He made the most of his chances and did some tough running to score his two touchdowns, too.
Punter battle might be over
Ryan Rehkow might have forced the team’s hand over the last few weeks. He hit multiple massive bombs on Sunday, including a 63-yarder in the second half that flipped field position. Brad Robbins might have been the starter if he had been healthy, but it’s hard to see how the team goes back now.
Still alive?
Maybe, but only if the defense wakes up. The Steelers lost on Sunday, dropping them to 3-1. The Browns and Ravens entered the day 1-2. The Bengals play the Ravens next week, too. If the offense can keep rolling and the defense manages to clean up its act, the Bengals might not be out of this thing just yet.
