A loss by Ole Miss and a near-loss by Miami helped Penn State make a move up in this week’s AP Top 25. Penn State moved up to no. 7 in this week’s media poll following the results of Week 5.
Alabama took over the top spot in the AP Top 25 this week after its exhilarating home win against Georgia. The crimson Tide moved up three spots to leap ahead of Texas, who was bumped from no. 1 to no. 2, and no. 3 Ohio State, who remained in its ranking from a week ago amid the changes around them. Georgia fell from no. 2 down to no. 5 and idle Tennessee moved up one spot to no. 4. The top 10 of the AP Top 25 is identical to the top 10 of this week’s US LBM Coaches Poll.
Penn State moved ahead of the Miami Hurricanes, who dropped one spot from no. 7 to no. 8 following a close call against Virginia Tech. Miami survived an overturned Hail Mary touchdown to avoid a loss in conference play to longtime foe Virginia Tech. Penn State also benefited from a sic-spot drop by Ole Miss from no. 6 down to no. 12. The Rebels lost at home to Kentucky and was dropped out of the top 10 by the AP voters, similar to the US LBM Coaches Poll.
Utah also fell out of the top 10 after losing at home against Arizona in a late night Big 12 matchup. The Utes fell from no. 10 down to no. 18, which helped Michigan climb back into the top 10 (up two spots to no. 10 this week) following its close win against Minnesota.
The Big Ten has seven teams ranked in this week’s media poll; no. 3 Ohio State, no. 6 Oregon, no. 7 Penn State, no. 10 Michigan, no. 11 USC, no. 23 Indiana, and no. 24 Illinois.
