Urban Meyer recognizes Washington CB Elijah Jackson for special teams effort

Elijah Jackson inspired his teammates with his impressive special teams tackle against Northwestern.

Washington Huskies cornerback Elijah Jackson is no stranger to playing the hero. His pass break-up in the end zone to deny Texas of what would have been the winning touchdown in the Sugar Bowl is a legendary play in school history.

Jackson grabbed his cape again and saved the day against the Northwestern Wildcats with what coach Urban Meyer called “One of the best efforts I’ve seen in many, many years.”

On the latest episode of his Big Ten Network show “Urban Analysis,” the three-time national champion gave the Washington cornerback his “Edge of the Week” award. Meyer said the honor isn’t about talent but an individual player making decisions to go hard.

Jackson denied Northwestern’s Joseph Himon II a 98-yard touchdown by chasing him all the way down the field and bringing him down on the two-yard line, which set up a goal-line stop from the Husky defense.

“I used to say there’s one thing that always overcomes a mistake — it’s called effort,” Meyer said.

Jackson was praised for his spectacular effort by Meyer and coach Jedd Fisch when he reversed his direction and sprinted over 70 yards to make the play and keep the Wildcats out of the end zone.

Meye went on to say, “Every play, there are mistakes made, this was a huge mistake by Washington. However, one player made a decision, and it was Elijah Jackson, and he saved the day.”
