Washington Huskies linebacker Khmori House has had quite the introduction to college football. Defensive coordinator Steve Belichick has asked the true freshman to step up for both gameplan and injury reasons – House played a high complement of snaps in the Apple Cup to try to limit Washington State quarterback John Mateer and then took on a heavier role against Northwestern due to injuries to Anthony Ward, Drew Fowler, and Carson Bruener.
Now, the linebacker is the Huskies’ first conference award honoree of the season. House was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Monday after racking up 3 tackles and an interception against Northwestern on Saturday.
Arguably the most athletic linebacker on the team, House has alternated time between off-ball linebacker and a de facto edge rusher role while trying to stop the option-based attacks of Washington State and Northwestern. Edge rusher Isaiah Ward called House’s effort “relentless” after the game on Saturday, while head coach Jedd Fisch has constantly praised the freshman’s mentality.
With Bruener, Fowler, Alphonzo Tuputala, and Bryun Parham all heading out of the door after this season, Washington will have big shoes to fill at linebacker. House’s development as a rotational player this season will pay big dividends in making him a key piece of the defense going forward, as we’ve seen with Bruener and Tuputala over the last few years.
