Mike McDaniel: We have to do a better job getting Tyreek Hill the ball

Tyreek Hill hasn’t made much of an impact in the last two weeks, but Mike McDaniel says it’s not the receiver’s fault.

During his prolific 2023 season, Tyreek Hill was held under 50 receiving yards in just one game. In the last two weeks, the Miami Dolphins receiver has finished with 23- and 40-yard performances.

After the second consecutive quiet day for Hill on Sunday, Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said the lack of production isn’t the receiver’s fault.

“As a captain, leader, Tyreek did a great job all week trying to make sure that he was doing his part, not only the pass game but the run game,” McDaniel said. “Give the Seahawks credit, they did some things to try to nullify him. … But this team needs him. He was prepared. He was ready. He had the appropriate energy. So, got to do a better job getting him the ball.”

Hill, 30, started the year with seven receptions for 130 yards against the Jacksonville Jaguars, taking one of his 12 targets for an 80-yard touchdown. He was targeted six times in Week 2 and five times Sunday against the Seahawks.

While the receiver could’ve helped himself some by catching a screen pass that bounced off his hands Sunday, giving one of the NFL’s most dangerous weapons just five opportunities to impact the game isn’t a winning formula for Miami.

“We have to do a better job staying on the field so we can get our playmakers the ball,” McDaniel said. “I think we only had three three-and-outs, but I think there were a lot of four-, five-play drives where we were able to get a first down and then couldn’t get out of our own way. So it has to get better for everyone to get better.”

But if Hill’s frustrated, he’s done a good job of hiding it.

“We’ll get there,” Hill told reporters after the game. “We’re still early in the season, a 1-2 team. That’s the beauty about it; we have a real good team, and we’ve got some great leaders who are keeping everybody together. We’ll have a captains meeting on what needs to be changed and be back to the drawing board Monday night.”
