It has taken nearly three and a half games, but Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard has his first touchdown pass since coming to the Fighting Irish from Duke.
The 38-yard touchdown strike to Beaux Collins is also Leonard’s longest completion of the year.
Leonard connected with Collins to put Notre Dame up 14-3 over the Miami of Ohio Redhawks in South Bend with 1:05 remaining in the first half. It capped off a 6-play, 81-yard drive that took 56 seconds.
Perhaps the Leonard-to-Collins deep throw will help untrack an Irish offense that struggled at times this season, especially in the passing game. The Notre Dame offense looked sloppy and disjointed until Leonard ran the ball into the end zone earlier in the second quarter.
At the very least, it might quell some of the calls for a change at quarterback to Steve Angeli.
