Gimme Him: Garrett Wilson would be playmaking target for Patriots

This would be a dream signing for Patriots fans

The New England Patriots are set to take on the New York Jets in a Thursday night matchup.

The Jets have an explosive offense, which is something the Patriots have been missing. In particular, they need production at the wide receiver position, and Jets star receiver Garrett Wilson makes the most sense for this week’s “Gimme Him” player.

Wilson burst onto the scene as a top-tier wideout after being drafted out of Ohio State in 2022. He has 188 career receptions for 2,262 yards and seven touchdowns. He is having a productive 2024 season so far, as he has recorded 10 catches for 117 yards.

The 24-year-old receiver would give the Patriots offense the ability to stretch the field and a dynamic playmaker who can make things happen after the catch. That dynamic playmaking ability, particularly on the outside, isn’t something the Patriots currently have on their roster.

Take last year for example, when Wilson averaged 10.97 yards per reception. That elite level of production came when the Jets were trying to find stability at the quarterback position, due to the injury of Aaron Rodgers. Wilson also averaged 6.20 yards per target, per statistics from Pro Football Reference.

New England is still struggling to get production from the wide receiver position, as the organization continues to rebuild the offense. The offense has proven successful as more of a run-first unit, but they are missing the balance and big-play ability a player like Wilson would give them. He’d be a true No. 1 target and a receiving weapon the quarterback room could rely on.

Wilson hasn’t even reached his prime, and he’s already teasing the potential to be one of the best receivers in the league. That mix of youth and high-end talent would be a key ingredient to help get the Patriots back on the right track.
