Gators among CBS Sports’ 5 most disappointing teams through Week 3

CBS Sports recently named the top five most disappointing teams in college football through three weeks of play, and Florida is on the list.

Gator Nation has already declared the 2024 college football season a failure for Florida, but don’t just take the fans’ word on that front.

CBS Sports recently broke down the five most disappointing teams in college football through three weeks, and the Orange and Blue are firmly in the No. 2 spot after ugly losses to Miami and Texas A&M.

“When every national college football columnist is racing to declare your head coaching tenure over, you know things aren’t going too well,” national college sports writer John Talty said.

“It’s not that Florida struggling was unexpected, but the Gators still make this list for how utterly atrocious they’ve looked doing it. [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag]’s time in Gainesville is running on fumes as it is painfully clear to everyone he doesn’t have the requisite skills to turn things around.”

Napier is hanging on to his job by a thread and it’s going to take some serious changes to even reach the four-win total most experts projected coming into the season.

“The most recent indignity came Saturday when Texas A&M, without its starting quarterback, still bullied Florida in a 33-20 win that wasn’t nearly as close as the final score suggested. Florida should never look as bad as it has this year under Napier, and for that reason alone, he’ll soon be out of a job.”

At least Florida’s Week 4 opponent, Mississippi State, is also on this list in the No. 4 spot. If Florida can’t pull out a win on Saturday, they’ll be the unanimous worst team in the SEC.

At least Florida State is doing worse

The silver lining most Florida fans have latched on to is that the Florida State Seminoles are somehow worse than an underperforming Gators team. The ‘Noles were ranked 10th overall coming into the season, but an 0-3 start has crushed all hopes of a College Football Playoff appearance and landed them at the No. 1 spot on the list.

“No program has underachieved more this season than Florida State, the easy choice for college football’s biggest disappointment. A year removed from a 13-1 record, the Seminoles look broken with no obvious answer on how to fix themselves.”

At least Florida is losing to ranked teams. Florida State has dropped games to Boston College, Georgia Tech and Memphis.

Of course, Florida and Florida State meet up at the end of every regular season. Who knows if either team will have their current head coach at the helm by that point, but it should be an entertaining game to determine which team is truly the worst in the state.
