Patriots reportedly waive veteran OT from IR with injury settlement

Patriots waive veteran OT from injured reserve

The New England Patriots waived offensive tackle Tyrone Wheatley Jr. on Monday after agreeing to an injury settlement, according to KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson.

Wheatley was part of the trade that sent running back Pierre Strong Jr. to the Cleveland Browns in August 2023. He appeared in two games for the Patriots, which included five special teams snaps. He was placed on injured reserve back in August.

The Patriots are currently struggling with depth at the tackle position. Mike Onwenu headlines the room for the team. Meanwhile, veteran Vederian Lowe is banged up, and the team was forced to rely on rookie Caedan Wallace to work in at left tackle in Sunday’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Injuries and personnel problems have plagued the offensive line for the Patriots in general. The team is stuck between a rock and a hard place with few real options for improving the unit in the present.

Things won’t get any easier with a road trip to MetLife Stadium on deck to face the New York Jets’ vaunted defense on Thursday night.
