Gallery: Washington drops the Apple Cup to in-state rival Washington State

The Washington Huskies suffered a tough loss in the Apple Cup.

For just the third time in the last 15 years, the Washington Huskies don’t own the Apple Cup. Coach Jedd Fisch lost his debut in the in-state rivalry game 24-19 to coach Jake Dickert and the Washington State Cougars inside Lumen Field on Saturday afternoon.

Despite 452 yards of offense, the Huskies were hindered by undisciplined play, resulting in 16 penalties for 135 yards that consistently put Washington behind the chains. Fisch’s team was also burned by Cougars quarterback John Mateer, who found the end zone three times: twice on the ground and once through the air.

Both of Mateer’s rushing touchdowns came from over 20 yards away as he picked up 62 yards on the ground.

Even with all the errors, the Huskies were in it until the end. Then, on fourth and goal from the one-yard line with 1:12 remaining in the game, Fisch called a speed option play for quarterback Will Rogers and running back Jonah Coleman to the short side of the field, which the Cougars immediately sniffed out.
