Iowa football receiving votes in latest US LBM Coaches Poll

Six Big Ten teams crack the rankings.

The Iowa Hawkeyes picked up a 38-21 win over Troy on Saturday to improve to 2-1 on the season before Big Ten play gets underway next week.

Iowa rode junior running back Kaleb Johnson’s 173 rushing yards and two scores en route to the victory. The Hawkeyes also used a 28-yard pick-six from graduate cornerback Jermari Harris and a late 39-yard rushing touchdown from sophomore running back Jaziun Patterson.

Iowa surprised by rolling out a red zone package for junior quarterback Brendan Sullivan. That worked, too. Sullivan connected with junior tight end Addison Ostrenga for a 2-yard touchdown on Sullivan’s lone pass and completion.

The Hawkeyes gave up too many big plays, though. Troy junior receiver Devonte Ross had touchdown catches of 63 and 62 yards and a 77-yard punt return touchdown.

Iowa also trailed Troy 14-10 at halftime before outscoring the Trojans 28-7 in the second half.

That might have scared the voters off some. Iowa remains in the receiving votes category of the latest US LBM Coaches Poll and is receiving 17 points.

Six Big Ten teams find their way into the rankings. Ohio State drops back a spot to No. 3, Oregon stays put at No. 6, Penn State is No. 8, USC is No. 12, Michigan is No. 17 and Nebraska is No. 22.
