UPDATE: 49ers to place Christian McCaffrey on Injured Reserve, could return to face Seahawks

Life moves fast in the NFL, and so does breaking news. Earlier on Saturday, we at Seahawks Wire published a story about how San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey has been ruled OUT for their Week 2 game against the Vikings, and are considering a possible stint on the Injured Reserve (IR) list. Well, not too later on Saturday morning, we got more news.

It was announced by NFL’s Ian Rapoport that the 49ers will in fact be officially placing their superstar running back on the IR list.

With McCaffrey going on IR, it means he will miss the next four games – at minimum. These games include

  • Week 2 at Minnesota
  • Week 3 at Los Angeles Rams
  • Week 4 vs New England Patriots
  • Week 5 at Arizona

Unfortunately, by McCaffrey going on IR now as opposed to next week, it means he will be active in time to play the Seattle Seahawks in Week 6 on Thursday Night Football. It would be Seattle’s luck that they drew McCaffrey’s potential season debut.

On the other hand, McCaffrey being out for a month’s worth of games is a break for the Seahawks and everyone else in the NFC West. The 49ers are absolutely not the same team without their best player. While they did handle the New York Jets in Week 1 behind the legs of Jordan Mason. It is also not the most difficult schedule for San Francisco to weather.

Still, we saw how much Brock Purdy and the 49ers offense struggled without McCaffrey for extended stretches. It will be interesting to see if San Francisco has a better contingency plan this year.
