New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo confirmed on Friday that rookie quarterback Drake Maye still gets 30 percent of the first-team reps in practice, even though he’s the backup behind Jacoby Brissett.
It’s an unusual strategy that NFL analyst and former quarterback Chase Daniel isn’t a fan of.
Daniel was a long-time veteran in the NFL. He played for seven teams in his 13-year career. He has experience as a backup quarterback and knows the dynamics of a quarterback room.
Drawing from his own experience, Daniel had a harsh take on the split approach by the Patriots’ coaching staff.

The coaching staff has spent the last few weeks proclaiming Brissett as the starter, but one has to wonder how long that will be the case with Maye eating into such a large chunk of the offensive reps.
