Mary Lou Mulflur to retire after 42 years as Washington’s women’s golf coach

Washington legend Mary Lou Mulflur will retire after 42 years at the helm of Washington golf.

For over four decades, Mary Lou Mulflur has helped the Washington Huskies women’s golf team become one of the most successful programs in the country. Now, that time will come to an end, as she announced that season No. 42 would be her last on Montlake and will retire following the 2024-25 season.

The Portland, Oregon native was a four time Husky letterman herself, playing for her mentor Edean Ihlenfeldt, who founded the program in 1974. The catalyst of Mulflur’s career was when Washington beat Stanford, UCLA and Virginia to bring home their first national championship in 2016.

In her 41 seasons at Washington, her team has earned a NCAA regional berth all but once and has advanced to the NCAA Championship 14 times. She was named national coach of the year in 2015 and 2016, was honored as the Pac-12 Coach of the Year three times and in 2013, was named to the Women’s Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

“It is with profound gratitude that I announce my retirement from the University of Washington at the conclusion of the 2024-25 academic year,” Mulflur said in a statement. “I have been so incredibly fortunate to have competed for Washington and to have been the head coach since December 1, 1983.

“But this day is not about me, “she continued. “It is about this amazing institution and more importantly, the incredible student-athletes that represent Washington every day. The young women that I have had the privilege of being around during my career have given me so much more than I could ever give them. Yes, winning the 2016 national championship is certainly the highlight of my career. However, the relationships that I have established, and still maintain, over all this time is what I will treasure the most. Watching those student-athletes grow into women with families and children is so incredibly gratifying and I wouldn’t trade my time with them for anything. Go Dawgs!”
