Geoff Collins wants UNC’s defense to limit the big plays

Geoff Collins points to an area of improvement for UNC’s defense moving forward.

With the North Carolina Tar Heels opening the season 2-0 with wins over Minnesota and Charlotte, the program is hoping to continue their winning ways.

They will host NC Central and then James Madison the next two weeks before the competition gets tougher beginning with their ACC opener at Duke. While they are 2-0, there is still room for improvement. Including on the defensive side.

Coordinator Geoff Collins is in his first year as the defensive coordinator for UNC and so far, so good in two wins. But Collins knows the team has to eliminate some explosive plays moving forward.

“Way too many explosives. There were eight explosive plays; 80% of their yardage, 80% of their first downs were off of eight plays,” Collins said. “The rest of the game, I thought the guys played lights out. But we can’t have those explosive plays.”

Charlotte had eight pass plays of over 25 yards on the game, a big number that simply has to be limited. The Tar Heels were still able to win the game, but moving forward better teams will take advantage of that.

“So, it’s just a learning experience,” Collins said. “We’re in game two, just making sure that as the formations change, as the looks change, the leverage, relative to where you are on the field, should be consistent.”

Let’s see if UNC can work on limiting those plays and playing some good football on the defensive side as the year goes on.
