Steelers to start QB Justin Fields vs. Falcons in Week 1

NEWS: Steelers to start QB Justin Fields vs. the Falcons in Week 1..

It appears the Pittsburgh Steelers are rolling with Justin Fields at quarterback to begin the season, replacing Russell Wilson for the team’s Week 1 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.

Wilson aggravated a prior calf injury at Thursday’s practice and was listed as questionable on the Steelers’ final injury report. The veteran QB was named the starter for Arthur Smith’s offense a few weeks ago but now Fields will get a chance to seize control of the starting job.

Fields, 25, has passed for 6,674 yards, 40 touchdowns and 30 interceptions since entering the league in 2021 as a first-round pick. When the Bears landed the No. 1 pick for the second straight year, they traded Fields to the Steelers for a conditional sixth-round pick in 2025.

Wilson, 35, is considerably more seasoned at the quarterback position, passing for 43,653 yards, 334 touchdowns and 106 career interceptions since entering the league in 2012.

The Falcons only had one notable injury this week, ruling out cornerback Antonio Hamilton. The team promoted veteran defensive back Kevin King along with wide receiver Chris Blair from the practice squad for Sunday’s game.
