Patriots Week 1 injury report: New name added before opener

A new name popped up on Thursday’s injury report

The New England Patriots are looking banged up ahead of Sunday’s Week 1 road matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.

That was reflected in Thursday’s injury report with running back Antonio Gibson being the latest addition with a hip injury. Offensive guard Sidy Sow was absent for a second straight report, and tackle Vederian Lowe was limited on the field.

Gibson was signed on the roster to serve in the James White role for the Patriots as a third-down receiving back. His status ahead of Sunday’s game against the Bengals will be worth monitoring.

It could lead to even more reps for JaMycal Hasty and possibly even Kevin Harris being promoted from the practice squad.

The offensive line remains the biggest question mark for the Patriots. Sidy Sow being out could have a negative impact on the team’s ability to move the ball on the ground.

Keep in mind, they’re already missing starting left guard Cole Strange. There was hope that Sow and rookie guard Layden Robinson would serve as the top two options, while kicking Mike Onwenu back out to right tackle.

Even at full health, there were major question marks surrounding the quality of talent for the Patriots. Those questions still remain with the roster now dealing with injuries.

The uphill battle for New England seems to get steeper by the week.
