UCLA football lands in USA Today’s misery index

Misery for UCLA…

The new era has begun for the UCLA Bruins football program. After a long offseason, DeShaun Foster got his first win as a head coach in a too-close-for-comfort 16-13 win over Hawaii.

Dan Wolken of USA Today compiled a misery index after Week 1, and UCLA made the list. The Bruins were in the “Miserable, but not miserable enough” category along with Michigan, Houston, and South Carolina.

UCLA: At least it wasn’t a loss in DeShaun Foster’s debut as head coach, but the Bruins were flirting with disaster in Hawaii before three field goals in the last 16 minutes lifted them to a 16-13 win. Foster, who played running back at UCLA before a solid NFL career, got this job largely because he was already on staff and nobody of note wanted it. Is he ready for prime time? Saturday’s performance won’t fill fans with confidence, at least in the near-term, but 1-0 is a whole lot better than 0-1.

The good news is UCLA has an extra week of preparation with a Week 2 and then a home game against Indiana for its Big Ten Conference debut.
