Big Ten announces tiebreaker procedures starting fall of 2024

Tiebreaker scenarios were announced for the Big Ten heading into the 2024 season.

With the expansion of the Big Ten, the chances of a tie for the final conference tournament game, which decides the Big Ten Championship could very likely be in play.

Before the start of the season, the conference announced its tiebreaker procedures. This is based on if two teams are tied in conference games only, there will be six steps to determine who the winning team is.

The first step is head-to-head. It makes sense. If the two teams play, the winner gets the tiebreaker. The second is based on record against common opponents. Third, records against common opponents with the best conference record.

Fourth is the best cumulative conference-winning percentage of all conference opponents. Fifth is the highest ranking by Sportsource Analytics, which is a team rating score metric. If still no decision is made, last, it will be made by a random draw by the conference commissioner.

The Discover Big Ten Championship game is slated for Saturday, December 7th in Indianapolis. The Michigan Wolverines are the defending champions, as they beat Iowa last season.
