When Kalen DeBoer accepted the job as the head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide, the question everyone wanted to know was, how do you plan on replacing the greatest coach of all time in Nick Saban? DeBoer has taken it all in stride and never shied away from the pressure, but nobody has ever really asked Saban about how he feels as the former Washington Huskies head coach as his successor.
In his role with College GameDay, Saban has not been afraid to give his opinion as he trolled Florida State fans about the Playoff race in Dublin, Ireland last week and today took a jab at Ohio State for their $20 million roster.
So, of course, he was truthful when he shared his thoughts on DeBoer and Alabama. DeBoer and Saban have a good relationship, but Saban does his best to stay out of DeBoer’s way to let him run the program his own way. You can tell that thinks very highly of the man that AD Greg Byrne picked to replace him saying,
“Kalen has done a great job taking over this program because he’s got the right disposition about him. He embraced the tradition. He embraced the culture. But he put his own mark on how he wanted to coach the team… I am really excited about what Kalen is going to do for Alabama.”
I’m sure part of Saban is sad to not be on the sidelines, especially considering he recruited most of these guys. However, it’s good to see him enjoying “retirement” and Alabama football is clearly in good hands as well.
