Shonn Greene named honorary captain for Iowa football’s season-opener

An Iowa Hawkeye legend, Shonn Greene, will be back inside Kinnick as honorary captain for the season opener against Illinois State.

One of the very best to do it for the Iowa Hawkeyes will be back inside Kinnick Stadium this week. But, rather than suiting up and playing, he will be leading the Hawkeyes before kickoff.

Former Iowa running back Shonn Greene, a member of the Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame, has been named the honorary captain for Iowa’s season-opener against the Illinois State Redbirds.

While at Iowa, Shonn Greene posted historic numbers that still hold up against anyone in Hawkeye history. During his career, he totaled 2,228 yards and 22 touchdowns.

His best campaign came during his third and final year with the program. As the lead back, he rushed for 1,850 yards averaging 6.0 yards per carry with 20 touchdowns. He helped lead Iowa to a 9-4 record and a victory over South Carolina in the Outback Bowl.

The 2008 season saw Greene take home many awards and receive great recognition for his efforts. He won the Doak Walker Award, an award given out annually to the top running back in college football, along with the Jim Brown Award, another award given to the nation’s top back.

Greene was selected as the Big Ten Most Valuable Player and the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year. Shonn Greene was named a First-Team All-Big Ten selection and a Unanimous All-American in 2008.
