Iowa football releases offensive coaching plans without Kirk Ferentz

The Iowa Hawkeyes offensive plan and how they manage some position groups will change with Kirk Ferentz suspended against Illinois State.

With head coach Kirk Ferentz and wide receiver coach Jon Budmayr sidelined for the Iowa Hawkeyes’ season opener against Illinois State, coaching responsibilities will be shuffling.

Kirk Ferentz oversees the managerial duties of the Hawkeyes such as going for it or punting on fourth downs, when to use timeouts, and overall game management decisions. That will become the duties of acting head coach Seth Wallace, the assistant head coach and linebackers coach.

Offensively, Budmayr’s absence will thrust some new faces into the wide receiver group. The wide receiver group will be coached by offensive coordinator Tim Lester with the help of graduate assistant Tanner Krueger, as told by wide receiver Jacob Gill to David Eickholt of 247Sports.

Krueger comes to Iowa from Wayne State College where he spent four years coaching the wide receivers, tight ends, and running backs. He played at Simpson College where he was a four-year letterman as a quarterback.

This leads to some intrigue after the release of Iowa’s depth chart yesterday. With Kaleb Brown suspended, Iowa is listing a young group on the depth chart. Redshirt freshman Jarriett Buie is starting alongside Kaden Wetjen (senior) and Jacob Gill (junior).

Behind them is more youth in freshman Reece Vander Zee and redshirt freshman TJ Washington alongside junior Seth Anderson to round out the wide receivers.
