Pat McAfee warns Penn State about ‘monster Week 1’ against West Virginia

Pat McAfee spent some time warning Penn State about the massive challenge coming up in Week 1 at West Virginia.

Penn State may not be in action in Week 0, but ESPN’s College GameDay is already looking forward to next week’s game in Morgantown, West Virginia. Penn State will open up the 2024 season on the road against former traditional and regional rival West Virginia in Week 1 in the second game in a home-and-home series. The Nittany Lions figure to use this game to show off what will hopefully be a polished and improved offense and set the tone for a possible run to a spot in the Big Ten championship game and College Football Playoff.

Of course, the outlook could dramatically change in a hurry with a misstep in Week 1 against the Mountaineers, a thought that did not escape noted West Virginia alum Pat McAfee on ESPN’s College GameDay in Dublin, Ireland on Saturday.

“Penn State’s got a monster Week 1,” McAfee said when discussing Penn State in the Big Ten championship picture. “Everything can change in the Big Ten conversation after one day in Morgantown, West Virginia.”

Naturally, Michigan alum Desmond Howard was heard cackling in response, seemingly getting a kick out of the slight at Penn State’s Big Ten title hopes.

McAfee may be a Pennsylvania native but he was a standout punter at West Virginia before becoming a Pro Bowl special teams star for the Indianapolis Colts in the NFL. McAfee is now the host of his own hit daily talk show and spends time on the set with College GameDay and doing some announcing for the WWE (a gig he is stepping away from more during the football season).

Penn State won last year’s season opener under the lights of Beaver Stadium, 38-15. This year’s rematch is already seeing the betting lines give Penn State a double-digit edge in the Week 1 matchup, which will be Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff game of the week.
