Caitlin Clark, Indiana Fever red hot in ESPN WNBA power rankings

The Fever are running red hot.

The Indiana Fever are running red hot right now coming out of the WNBA All-Star and Olympic break. Picking up their play in style has them trending in the right direction and into the league’s upper echelon.

Out of the break, the Fever has rattled off back-to-back wins over the Pheonix Mercury and the Seattle Storm, both of which are playoff teams. Those wins ascended them into the top five of the CBS Sports WNBA Power Rankings.

Another major outlet, ESPN, has the Fever in their top five as well. The Indiana Fever are coming in at No. 5 in the most recent ESPN WNBA Power Rankings.

5. Indiana Fever (13-15)

Previous ranking: 5

This week: @ MIN (Aug. 24)

The Fever won their two games last week in different ways: purely outscoring Phoenix in a 98-89 victory and then playing one of their better defensive games — plus hitting 15 3-pointers — in beating Seattle 92-75. Caitlin Clark breaking the rookie season assist record, getting 19 assists in the two games, was a headliner. But so was her scoring along with fellow guard Kelsey Mitchell (they had a combined 107 points) and Aliyah Boston‘s rebounding (combined 24), plus her career-high 8 assists Sunday. With 13 victories, Indiana has tied the most wins it has had in any of the past seven seasons — with 12 games to go. – Michael Voepel, ESPN

The two wins have brought the Fever to 13-15 on the season and sitting in the No. 7 seed for the WNBA playoffs coming down the home stretch. They are two games behind the Phoenix Mercury for the No. 6 seed and hold a 1.5-game lead over the Chicago Sky who currently sit in the No. 8 seed.

The two wins have seen Caitlin Clark put on some of her best work yet. Against Phoenix, she posted 29 points and 10 assists with 5 rebounds. She followed that up with 23 points, 9 assists, and 5 rebounds against Seattle.

The Fever’s next game is Saturday, August 24 on the road against the Minnesota Lynx at 7 p.m. CT.
