UNC basketball’s first opponent for Maui Invitational sent

The UNC basketball program will face off against Dayton to begin the 2024 Maui Invitational.

The North Carolina Tar Heels will head to Hawaii this fall for a game against the University of Hawaii and then the Maui Invitational. While we know information on the non-conference game against the Rainbow Warriors, we now know who the Tar Heels will face off against first in Maui.

Per Jon Rothstein, the Tar Heels will open up their Maui Invitational against Dayton on Monday, November 25th.  The Tar Heels will be at the bottom of the bracket, and will play either the winner or loser of Auburn and Iowa State.

Defending national champion UConn will face off against Memphis while Michigan State and Colorado will battle in the other first-round game.

This year’s field is another loaded one featuring the two-time defending champion Huskies as well as programs like Auburn, Michigan State, Iowa State, and Memphis.

North Carolina has had success in Maui, appearing in the tournament eight times and winning it four times. They last appeared in 2020 when the tournament was moved to Asheville, North Carolina due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They last won it in 2016.
